A Fond Farewell to 2010

big-old-treeYou might be thinking that I’m counting down the minutes until 2010 comes to a close.  You might be thinking that I am running in the direction of 2011.

I could let the screen door hit 2010 in the butt, on its way out.

I could give it a swift kick for good measure.

This last year was full of tears, and 2 x 4s to the head, and dashed hopes as well as triumphs and lessons learned.  We experienced  real, tangible, sustainable growth.

We worked hard.

We paid our dues.

We learned.

We grew.

And our tool boxes were exchanged for larger tool sheds.

We saw that we can handle what is put in front of us – sometimes with grace, other times, not so much.

There is less fear in our little house.

There is real optimism.

To 2011, I say, “Let’s see what you got.  We’re ready.  We’re excited to learn more, fail more, and grow more.  We’ve got the tools.  Let’s get started.”

But before I greet 2011, I want to wrap 2010 in a warm embrace, and send it off with a kiss.

Thank you, 2010, for the opportunities to try and fail and cry and think about giving up.  Thank you for the chance to try harder and not give up.  Thank you for making us stronger.  Thank you for showing us how to love more.

I’ll think of you often – sometimes not so fondly.  But I appreciate all you’ve taught us.

It’s fine with me, 2010, if we never meet again.

Happy New Year !

p.s. Two days ago I finished the first draft of Seeing My Path. I have to thank 2010 for that, too.

  1. I couldn’t have said it better…

  2. Annie,

If I had a crystal ball, I bet I’d see amazing things in it for your new year.

    Best wishes, friend. : )

  3. Thanks for that Jesse. I too have had a year of scary, no choice, changes.

To all of us that lived 2010 that way, I pray that 2011 will be our healing year x

  4. I am reflecting on the good things about 2010. Both my boys became engaged to the loves of their lives and they are very happy. There our other good things, but this is the best reflection. Seeing our kids happy is a wonderful gift. FYI, yes, A told me last night his engagement is official, too.
2010 has also been challenging, but strength and great friends get us all through the hard times.

  5. Tina,

I wish you all the best, too.

(A large part of me says 2011 has GOT to be better.)

  6. Kath,

    Congratulations!

That’s a wonderful way to end a year, and start a new one.

All the best to your about-to-be-getting-larger family!

  7. I love the way you wrote this post, kicking 2010 in the butt. Wonderful imagery. Here’s to 2011!

  8. Pat,

You already know that I wish you the best. : )
